Have you ever had a dream that lingered quietly in the background — patiently waiting for the right moment to bloom?
For me, that dream was design. It began when I was a little girl sewing my own outfits after school, continued through years of painting flowers in the margins of life, and finally blossomed into the career I never knew I was always meant for.
Growing up, I was always creating. I painted, sketched, stitched, sculpted, and spent countless hours with my mother and grandmother learning how to sew, knit, embroider and crochet. At one point, I dreamed of being a ballerina… and I did that too. For years, I trained in classical ballet, taught classes, and even hand-sewed sequins onto dance costumes late into the night. But through it all, my love for fabric, pattern, and colour quietly followed me.
In the decades that followed, I co-ran a family business in the jewellery industry with my husband, raised four children, and explored creativity in between school drop-offs and business meetings. Art was always there — sometimes on canvas, sometimes in mosaic, and often in handmade collages or weekend crafts with the kids. The one constant?
Flowers. Always flowers. Especially Australian natives.
Their form, structure, and colour captivated me.
How I Became a Full Time Artist and Surface Pattern Designer (After Ballet, Business and a Big Leap of Faith)
When my youngest child reached high school, life nudged me again.
My daughter had just started studying fashion design and mentioned a course in Textile Design and Fabric Printing. On a whim — and with a mix of excitement and fear — I applied. I remember preparing a full portfolio, designing original patterns for the first time in my life, and nervously waiting eight weeks for a letter. When I was accepted into the course, I cried.
That year changed everything.
I discovered surface pattern design — and I knew I’d found it. My thing. The language I’d been speaking in stitches and paint and petals for decades had a name. I studied intensely, absorbed everything I could, and spent nights dreaming in colour palettes and motifs.
Today, I run my own art and design studio. I’ve exhibited my work internationally. I’ve created licensed collections, and I sell original artwork and thoughtfully designed homewares inspired by Australia’s natural beauty. And I still paint flowers — always.
But more than anything, I create art that brings beauty into the everyday. Art that tells a story. Art that becomes part of your home, your memories, and your life.
