Birds of Australia — Colourful Bird Art, Prints & Gifts
I've always loved Australian birds.
There's something about the colour of them — the electric blue of a Kingfisher, the scarlet and cobalt of a Rosella, the soft sulphur crest of a Cockatoo — that stops me every time. I find them endlessly inspiring, and over the years they've made their way into my work in prints, homewares, stationery and gifts.
I'm Kirsten Katz — an Australian artist and surface designer based in Sydney. I'm best known for my botanical wall art and floral designs, but my Birds of Australia collection is close to my heart. It's a celebration of the extraordinary wildlife found on this continent — birds that are indigenous to Australia and found nowhere else in the world.
The Birds in the Collection
The collection features four Australian birds that I've returned to again and again over the years.
Rosellas — brightly coloured parrots found in eastern and south-eastern Australia. The combination of red, blue, yellow and green in a single bird is almost impossible to believe. I've painted them with native florals — proteas and banksias — which feels right. Both are unmistakably Australian.
Kingfishers — known for their vibrant plumage and that extraordinary iridescent blue. I've painted them in several colourways — acqua, cream, and a richer jewel-toned version — because the bird itself seems to shift colour depending on the light.
Cockatoos — one of Australia's most recognisable birds. Bold, characterful, and immediately recognisable. The Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo in particular has that quality of looking like it knows exactly what it's doing.
Finches — small songbirds found in woodlands throughout Australia. Where the Cockatoo is dramatic, the Finch is delicate. I love the contrast of painting both.

Across Prints, Homewares and Gifts
The Birds of Australia collection spans a range of products — not just art prints. There are tea towels, greeting cards, notebooks, wooden brooches, coasters and gift sets, all featuring these beautiful birds.
The tea towels in particular have been popular gifts — the Kingfisher and Rosella Paradise designs bring colour and a genuine sense of place into a kitchen. They're the kind of thing that makes people smile every time they reach for one.
If you're looking for a distinctly Australian gift — something that feels specific to this country and its wildlife — the bird collection is worth exploring. It works beautifully as a gift for someone who loves Australia, who's moved away, or who simply loves colour and the natural world.
You can explore the full range including prints, homewares and stationery in the Birds of Australia collection.
The Connection to My Broader Work
The bird designs grew from the same place as my botanical work — a genuine love for the Australian natural world. The plants and the birds inhabit the same landscape. The proteas and banksias I paint are the same ones the Rosellas and Cockatoos move through.
Putting them together in the one collection felt natural. It's all part of the same story — a celebration of what's specific and extraordinary about this continent.
