Thyme — A Herb for Courage, Strength & Healing

The Timeless Power of Thyme

As February draws to a close, we turn our focus to thyme, our herb of the month. More than just a fragrant culinary staple — thyme is a botanical treasure revered for centuries as a symbol of courage, strength, and healing. Ancient warriors carried sprigs of thyme into battle for bravery, and healers used it in herbal remedies to restore vitality.

Thyme is a reminder that even the smallest things — like a humble herb — can hold great power. In this post we'll explore the history, symbolism, and practical uses of thyme, as well as how you can incorporate its energy into your daily life.

I'm Kirsten Katz — an Australian artist and surface designer based in Sydney. I grow thyme in my garden alongside a whole collection of herbs I use for cooking. There's something I love about thyme in particular — the way those tiny, delicate flowers appear in the softest lavender and white, and the miniature leaves that pack so much fragrance into such a small space. It's one of those plants that rewards you for looking closely. The silvery-green stems, the almost dusty quality of the foliage, the way it spills over pot edges and garden borders without asking for much in return. It finds its way into my cooking constantly — roast vegetables, slow-cooked meats, homemade bread — and into my thinking about colour, texture and the beauty of small things.

The Symbolism of Thyme

Thyme has long been associated with courage, resilience, and protection, making it a powerful herb to focus on as we transition into a new season.

Courage & Strength — In medieval times, knights received embroidered thyme on their cloaks as a symbol of bravery before battle. It was believed that carrying thyme could give one strength and determination.

Healing & Protection — Used in ancient herbal medicine, thyme was valued for its antibacterial and purifying properties. It was often burned in temples and homes to clear negativity and promote good health.

Mental Clarity & Focus — The scent of thyme has been linked to mental alertness, making it a wonderful herb to support creativity, concentration, and clear thinking.

Whether used in rituals, remedies, or simply enjoyed in a meal, thyme carries an energy of perseverance, protection, and renewal.

Thyme in History & Tradition

Thyme has been cherished in cultures around the world for thousands of years:

  • Ancient Greece & Rome: Used in temples and baths to purify the air and the spirit. Roman soldiers believed it brought courage before battle.
  • Medieval Europe: Women embroidered thyme onto knights' garments as a token of protection.
  • Traditional Herbalism: Healers used thyme in teas, tinctures, and healing balms for colds, infections, and respiratory issues.

Today, thyme continues to be valued in both culinary and wellness traditions, serving as a reminder of resilience and inner strength.

Ways to Incorporate Thyme's Energy into Your Life

Thyme's healing and empowering properties make it an excellent herb to bring into your daily routine. Here are a few ways to embrace its energy:

Boost Your Creativity & Focus — Diffuse thyme essential oil or keep a small thyme plant near your workspace to promote mental clarity. Surround your creative space with art that inspires — explore my botanical wall art prints.

Sip on Thyme Tea for Wellness — Make a simple herbal tea with fresh or dried thyme to support immunity and relaxation.

Burn Thyme for Cleansing & Protection — Just like sage, dried thyme can be burned to clear negative energy and refresh your space.

Cook with Intention — Add thyme to soups, roasted vegetables, or homemade bread as a way to nourish both body and spirit.

Practice a Courage Ritual — When facing a challenge, take a deep breath and inhale the scent of thyme. Let its history of bravery and resilience inspire confidence in your next steps.

Moving Forward with Strength & Intention

As we prepare to welcome a new month, let thyme remind you that strength comes in many forms — sometimes in bold action, and sometimes in quiet persistence. Whether you embrace thyme in your kitchen, creative practice, or mindset, its timeless wisdom encourages courage, renewal, and focus.

Art Inspired by the Colours of Thyme

Thyme has a palette all of its own — those silvery-green leaves, the dusty blue-grey of the stems, and those tiny soft lavender and white flowers. It's a quietly sophisticated palette that I find myself drawn to. The prints and accessories below reflect those same tones. The blue-grey of the Moody Blues, the soft azure of the Blue Abstract Flowers, and the botanical blues of the Protea Azure Silk Scarf — all carrying something of that calm, silvery quality that thyme brings to the garden.
