Violets — February's Flower of the Month

A Flower of Love, Modesty, and Devotion

As we continue our journey through February, we turn our attention to this month's flower of the month: the violet. Often associated with deep emotions, violets represent love, loyalty, modesty, and devotion. Delicate yet resilient, they remind us that love is not always bold and extravagant — sometimes, it's quiet, gentle, and deeply meaningful.

From ancient mythology to modern creativity, violets have carried a rich history of symbolism and inspiration. Let's explore their meaning, how they've been used throughout time, and ways you can embrace their essence in your daily life.

I'm Kirsten Katz — an Australian artist and surface designer based in Sydney. Violets hold a special place in my heart. Growing up, I used to pick violets from my mother's garden — those tiny, perfect purple blooms — and make little posies with them, carefully surrounded by the heart-shaped violet leaves. There was something completely magical about those miniature bouquets. The colour, that deep soft purple, the way the leaves framed the flowers so naturally. I've loved violets ever since. They're one of those flowers that feels both humble and extraordinary at the same time — easy to overlook, but impossible to forget once you've really looked at them.

The Symbolism of Violets

Violets have been revered for centuries for their deep meanings and beautiful simplicity.

Loyalty & Devotion — In Victorian times, gifting violets was a way of expressing deep faithfulness and love. They were often exchanged between lovers as a promise of unwavering devotion.

Humility & Modesty — Unlike bold, towering blooms, violets grow low to the ground, symbolising humility and quiet strength. Their presence reminds us that beauty is often found in the simplest things.

Inspiration & Creativity — The violet's vibrant colour has long been a source of artistic inspiration, from royal robes to poetic verses. The phrase shrinking violet comes from the flower's symbolism of soft-spoken grace and quiet confidence.

Violets in Mythology and History

Violets appear in myths and legends across cultures:

  • Ancient Greece & Rome: The violet was sacred to Aphrodite (goddess of love) and Venus, symbolising beauty and devotion.
  • Medieval Europe: Monks used violets in medicinal remedies, believing they brought peace and healing.
  • Napoleon & Josephine: Napoleon Bonaparte famously used violets to express his love for Josephine, making them a symbol of enduring affection.

Whether in romance, mythology, or history, violets have always been seen as a flower that speaks the language of the heart.

Embracing the Energy of Violets in Daily Life

Violets invite us to slow down and appreciate the quieter forms of love and connection. Here are some simple ways to bring their symbolism into your life:

Practice Gentle Self-Love — Take moments of quiet reflection, journaling, or mindfulness to honour yourself and your journey.

Create with Softness — Experiment with delicate pastel tones, soft brushstrokes, or intricate patterns in your art. Surround your creative space with pieces that inspire — explore my botanical wall art prints.

Incorporate Florals into Your Space — Fresh violets, floral prints, or violet-scented candles can add a soothing, romantic atmosphere to your surroundings.

Celebrate Thoughtful Gestures — Show kindness through small, heartfelt actions — writing a note, sharing a favourite quote, or gifting a friend a flower.

Love doesn't always have to be loud. Sometimes, it's found in small, meaningful gestures and quiet moments of connection.
